What Is the CORI Surgical System?

An innovative robotics-assisted platform, the CORI system is designed to help surgeons accurately and precisely place and align an implant during knee replacement surgery. Unlike other robotic-assisted knee replacement systems that require CT scans, this surgical system works without CT, MRI, or other preoperative imaging. Instead, it uses image-free, smart mapping to build a computer-rendered 3D model of the patient’s knee. This model helps surgeons create a patient-specific surgical plan that is based on the unique shape and motion of the patient's knee.

Is CORI Knee Replacement Right for You?

You may be a good candidate for knee replacement surgery using the CORI system if you:

  • Are experiencing severe knee pain
  • Are unable to accomplish your normal daily activities due to knee pain
  • Have cartilage damage in one or more compartments of the knee
  • Have tried nonsurgical treatment options, such as anti-inflammatory medication, pain medication, and physical therapy
  • Suffer from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis

To determine if partial knee replacement or total knee replacement using the CORI system is right for you, your orthopaedic surgeon will perform a thorough evaluation as well as ask you questions about the knee pain you are experiencing and how it is affecting your daily life. Your surgeon may also order additional diagnostic tests, such as an MRI or X-rays, to get a better understanding of what is causing your pain. If your surgeon determines that only part of the knee is causing your pain, they may recommend partial knee replacement instead of total knee replacement.

What to Expect During Partial Knee Replacement

Before your partial knee replacement, your orthopaedic surgeon will use the CORI system to create a 3D model of your knee joint. Using this information, your surgeon will determine the size and position of the implant as well as create an individualized surgical plan.

During your partial knee replacement surgery, your surgeon will use the CORI handpiece, a robotics-assisted surgical tool, to remove the damaged section of your knee joint. The handheld robotics tool utilizes the 3D model of your knee to help your surgeon accurately differentiate between the damaged area of your knee that needs to be removed and the healthy areas. Once the damaged part of your knee has been removed, the implant can be placed.

Following surgery, you will start your personalized recovery plan. Your surgeon will provide you with guidelines to follow as well as discuss which activities are okay and which ones should be avoided for the time being. As your recovery progresses, your surgeon will let you know when you can start participating in certain activities again.

What to Expect During Total Knee Replacement

Just like during the preoperative phase of partial knee replacement, your orthopaedic surgeon will create a 3D model of the anatomy of your knee using the CORI Surgical System. They will then use this information to create a personalized surgical plan to follow during your procedure.

In the operating room, your orthopaedic surgeon will use the CORI handpiece to remove the damaged bone and cartilage within your knee joint. Once all of the affected cartilage and bone have been removed, your surgeon will use the handheld robotics tool to prepare the knee joint and accurately place the implant components. After the implants have been placed, your surgeon will ensure the movement and balance is correct before closing the incisions.

After your total knee replacement surgery, you will start a recovery plan that has been individually designed for you. Your orthopaedic surgeon will provide you with guidelines to follow during your recovery period. They will also go over which activities are okay as well as which ones you should avoid for the time being. As your recovery progresses, the activities you can participate in will increase.
