Dr. Garrick Cason First in Nation to Perform Surgery With New Spine Implant

On Oct. 21, fellowship-trained spine surgeon Dr. Garrick Cason performed the country’s first spine surgery using the new, innovative SPIRA-A Integrated Fixation System by Camber Spine. The surgery was performed at Ascension Sacred Heart Bay Hospital at 615 N. Bonita Ave. A. Patients in need of specialized back, neck and spine care can call 850-863-2153 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Cason at the practice’s location in Panama City at 1827 Harrison Ave.

Cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in July, the SPIRA-A Integrated Fixation System is a medical device used to help repair damaged discs in the lower back. It's designed to encourage the growth of new bone tissue, which can help stabilize the spine. This device has a special design that allows for the placement of bone graft material, which further promotes healing. Additionally, the implant offers options for extra support to ensure the device stays securely in place. It is used to treat conditions of the lower back, including degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis and spinal deformities, and it offers benefits like:

  • More even weight distribution post-surgery.
  • Less chance of reduced disc space after surgery.
  • An enhanced fusion environment for faster recovery.
  • Less discomfort post-surgery.

“We are dedicated to providing our patients with state-of-the-art care at Orthopaedic Associates, and I’m proud to be able to bring the innovation of the SPIRA-A system to more patients,” said Dr. Cason. “Lumbar spine problems are a common affliction, but modern spine medicine is exciting, and this implant is another big step into the future of patient-centered care and lasting relief.”

Dr. Cason attended The University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. After medical school, he went on to complete his residency in orthopaedic surgery at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Chattanooga. Dr. Cason chose to undergo additional specialty training through a fellowship in spine surgery at the William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.
